Topic
The Challenges and
Transformation of Medical Education during the COVID-19 Pandemic Era
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has an unprecedented impact on medical /nursing education. To prevent the pandemic spread, many countries, including Taiwan, have closed schools at all levels, and students have suspended their studies in schools. It will pose important challenges, which include:
- The implementation of remote teaching, including synchronicity and asynchronicity.
- Suspension or shortening of clinical practice and alternative internship.
- Health care licensing and the provision of the workforce.
- Culture of professionalism and altruism.
- Mental health support for both students and teachers and the maintenance of internship safety.
The
COVID-19 pandemic has formed a new normal environment in which social
distancing is emphasized, pandemic prevention and control are enforced, and
everyone feels uncertain or doesn't generally feel safe. Medical educators can
find new opportunities for education through educational triage,
caring-centered pedagogy, strengthening the partnership between schools and
hospitals, and setting up a medical and nursing profession model.
